Digger Demolition - Monday 2/4/12

The serious work on the garden started in earnest this morning with our neighbouring farmer, Jean Luc, demolishing the reinforced concrete blocks at the back of the garden so that we can extend the grass. Mr. Rault, the previous owner had built a very substantial rabbit run/pigeon coup there and poor Louis tried to demolish it previously himself, but it was just impossible for him. Louis did a great job over the last few weeks or so dismantling all the framework and wire, but the concrete was just an impossible task.
The digger had the concrete broken up and wrenched out of the ground in no time at all and then Jean Luc's wife arrived with a tipper truck and Louis helped her put the broken concrete onto the digger claw and away it went, into the truck - hooray! Louis said she didn't need too much help, and that she was very strong - that is French farmers' wives for you. Not only do they cook and clean, they drive tractors, trucks and get rid of heavy concrete!
Louis then had the delightful job of rotivating the soil before seeding the grass.
We are taking advantage of it perhaps being the last dry, sunny day, to sow the grass seed at the side of the house as well as at the back. The weather may be taking a turn tomorrow and there could be rain forecast, so best to get the grass seed down now according to Louis. Let's hope it is nice tomorrow and we may get the seeding finished, fingers crossed.
Both Louis and Jim worked very hard after lunch rollering the side area so that the grass will be very flat when it grows, Jim was absolutely knackered when he finished at 6pm, and Louis was too - beers all around, well done chaps!
