Andora is a lovely little town and today, the sun shone for a bit of a change! Thursday and Friday have been complete washouts due to torrential rain, so it was nice to be able to get on our bikes and stay dry today.
The town is the last resort on the western edge of the Riviera delle Palme and it was founded by Phocaeans from Asia Minor several centuries BC. The beaches are lovely and the marina is very much a main part of the town with space for 600 boats. There is also a shipwreck from World War II lying on the rocky sea bed. Andora is famous for several species of whales and dolphins and stands at the centre of the Whale Sanctuary which was set up recently by Italy, France and the principality of Monaco.
Last night, we went to Il Bastione for dinner. It is a very unusual ‘watchtower’ restaurant serving traditional Italian food. We had a lovely relaxed meal of Mixed Seafood Salad to start with followed by a Tomato and Garlic pizza and Fried Marlin Steak with salad. The meal was very reasonable with the pizza being only 5 euros! And their bottles of water in restaurants are only 1 euro - Britain should learn from this.......
Today, we cycled around the town and went for a wander around the Antiques stalls on the main street, and then we took the bus to the next town of Alassio (we originally had planned to berth here, but they had no space). It is also a lovely place and because it was so warm today, there were lots of people sunbathing on the beaches and Jim even dipped his toe in the Med and said it was ‘absolutely Baltic’! We also had our first real taste of Italian Ice Cream in Alassio today and it was simply the best!
Hopefully the sunshine will continue for tomorrow’s horse-riding event here in Andora, on the beach. More updates to follow........
