Cavalaire Sur Mer - Saturday 7th February, 2009

This is a lovely little village and we are going to stay here for a couple of weeks, before moving on. At 50€ per week, we cannot resist the bargain!! Facilities around the Port are excellent and there are good shops within walking distance, so it couldn’t be better for us to relax here over a couple of week-ends and enjoy the start of the Six Nations Rugby Tournament. Allez Ecosse!
Beside the Capitainerie at the entrance to the Port, there is a beautiful racing yacht called Moonbeam IV. It was constructed in Fairlie by William Fife in 1915 for the son of medical personnel to Queen Victoria and then went into the hands of Prince Rainier of Monaco who sailed with Princess Grace on her. It is now the property of Guy Couach and rests here in Cavalaire for everyone to see and enjoy. She is 35m long, 5.35m wide with a mast height of 25m, draws 4m and weighs 80t.
Next week, from 13th to 16th, there is a big Festival here, with floats decorated with flowers on the Sunday circling the village. Lots of the businesses within the community sponsor and decorate the floats and a prize is awarded for the best one. There is also a funfair on the Esplanade du Port, so the atmosphere should be terrific, and we are looking forward to enjoying this very much.
Fingers crossed, the sun shines all week, like today, although the big winds are back again, keeping the temperatures down.
