Mainland Marseille - Sunday 18th January, 2009

On Sunday morning, we went for a 30 minutes walk around part of the Ile de Pomegues, before taking the Ferry across to Marseille, 30 minutes away. The Ferry takes you in to the old town which seems to be at the heart of everything.
Marseille is quite commercialised and a bit of a dump in some areas, but it also has lovely ‘Paris’ styled buildings/hotels and modern shops and restaurants, not to mention the massive Marina. We had a lovely Asian Tapas lunch in ZenZen, which was absolutely delicious and a nice change - and they offer free wi-fi!
Then, we took the little tourist train to the Notre Dame de la Garde church at the top of the hill. The views over Marseille were incredible, and the church was absolutely beautiful inside and out. We then picked up the little train and descended to the old port and had a couple of pints of Guinness in O’Malley’s Irish Bar at 6€ a pint! Luckily the second pint was 4€50 as happy hour started at 5pm until 9pm each night.
Then it was back on board the 6pm Ferry to our pretty little Island. We stopped on our walk back to GG at The Grillade Restaurant and had a lovely dinner of Fish Soup and Haddock with potatoes, vegetables & aioli which both were really delicious. Jim’s Fish Soup was a bit of a handful, but he got there in the end - It was stuffed full with little crabs, mussels, cod, langoustines and then you eventually got to the broth and could thankfully add the toasted French bread, cheese & rouille! It was lovely to have lunch and dinner out today and no cooking and dishes to wash on GG!
