Ile de Porquerolles, La Perle des Iles d'Or (The Gem of the Golden Islands) - Friday 30th January, 2009

This really is a gem of a little island, it is most beautiful and is situated on the same parallel as the Cape of Corsica, making it the most extreme southern tip of the Provencal Coast. It has 3000 acres and forms an arc stretching from West to East, is 7km long, 3km wide and 142m high.
In 1988, the island was put under the protection of the French National Trust to keep its natural beauty.
We cycled today using one of the recommended routes on our tourist map, Le Levant Circuit. This took us to the Eastern part of the island to its beaches, inlets and forts. The difficulty listed on the map was ‘average & athletic’ for this and after finishing the almost 3 hour ride (a lot of which we pushed our bikes up the bloody steep hills!), we both decided we would have rather chosen one of the easy levels! The main problem was that there were no actual paths, it is more like gravel and mud you are cycling on, making it much more difficult for our little fold up bikes…….All the same, it was most enjoyable, and the views were amazing, and well worth the effort.
