Au Revoir Montchanin, Bonjour St. Leger Sur Dheune, Canal Du Centre - Monday 25th August 2008

We left at 9am this morning with the weather overcast, but pleasant., with 19 locks ahead of us, we set off heading NE and were raring to go! Got to the first one at 9.30am, lights not working. I eventually managed to get ashore and tried to manually operate the cord, still no joy. Pushed the red help button, no response. Eventually a white van arrived at 9.45am and they re-set the lock for us, as well as the rest of the flight to come.
We had confused things (easily done in France!) - before we stopped at Montchanin, we told them that we were staying until Tuesday 10am, but at that stage we didn’t know the stopping place didn’t exist, so as we had decided to leave a day early, they weren’t expecting us! Don’t think we were very popular………C’est la Vie!
All locks are going down on this part of the canal, much easier than going up! The drop varies in size from just under 3m to over 5m. The bigger locks are fitted with floating bollards which carry your lines down.
By 1pm the sky cleared and it was hot, hot, hot, again. We arrived at St. Leger at 2.30pm and tied up in the Port De Plaisance. 5€ per night including electricity. And guess what, no fuel! The next place for fuel is Chalon Sur Saone, 33km away, so we will fuel up there, let’s hope the fuel gauges are accurate……
St. Leger Sur Dheune is a pretty, tiny village, unfortunately a Monday is not the best day to visit, as everything is closed. We found a paper shop open and got the Sunday Times and relaxed reading yesterday’s news.
We will stay here overnight and leave at 10am tomorrow, heading for Santenay and some Bourgogne Wine Tasting (We better not confuse the VNF people again and stay here longer, as they are expecting us at 10am on the dot tomorrow at the next lock!).
St. Leger Sur Dheune is 46’50’.743N 004’38’.010E and we travelled 10nm today.
