What a lovely place, Montceau Les Mines is. The town has fabulous shopping right on your doorstep, with lovely bars and restaurants all within walking distance.
The rain, thunder and lightning, forecast for Friday started off that way, but after 5pm, we had clear blue skies and heat again, how bizarre the weather is here, it is so changeable.
We had a lovely meal out on Friday night - see separate blog entry for full details!
On Saturday morning, the market set up early and woke us up, but we were keen to go there anyway, so that gave us an incentive to get up. As expected, it was a fabulous market with clothes, sunglasses, cd’s, dvd’s, fish, meat, vegetables, bread and rottiseried chicken. There were also live chicken and rabbits for sale. By 12 noon they were all packed up and the cleansing arrived to clear the debris left - amazingly efficient.
We set off at 10.45am on Sunday, heading NE towards Montchanin. There were 9 locks in total, all automatic and the weather was comfortably warm with some light clouds.
We arrived at 1pm and the stopping place published in our Navicarte didn’t exist (again!), so we continued and found a convenient place to stop further up the canal and pulled up alongside the bank, securing our lines with metal stakes ashore. We had planned on fuelling up here , but as the stop doesn’t exist then we will need to wait!
We had a lovely cycle into the village of Montchanin, 2.5km from our stopping place, and a beer in one of the tabacs. The towpath alongside the canal is a dream to cycle on, as it is completely flat.
We will stay here overnight and head for St. Leger Sur Dheune through 19 locks tomorrow morning, where it is listed they have fuel. (As we are now only using one engine and alternating them, it is difficult for us to gauge how much fuel we are using - our fuel gauges show ¾ tanks, but we have been caught out with this before, running out when they showed ¼ tanks when we first got the boat. After St. Leger, the next main stopping place is Chalon Sur Saone, and we know there is definitely fuel there).
We are 46’44’.651N 004’29’543E (2.5km from Montchanin), and travelled 8.40nm today.
