Au Revoir Marseilles Les Aubigny, Bonjour Nevers, Canal Lateral a la Loire - Thursday 7th August 2008

Marseilles Les Aubigny was a very pretty, tiny village and to be honest, we were gob smacked that they actually had a Port de Plaisance. What a lovely surprise this was.
The place is immaculate with beautiful little cottages lining the streets with the prettiest of window boxes, a huge church with a very loud bell that chimes on the hour and half hour (better than an alarm clock!), a Town Hall, a Grocery Store, a Tabac and a Tennis Court. There are excellent shower facilities beside the marina and a room with huge sinks to do hand washing.
An overnight stay here was only 5€ and that included electricity and water. Showers were 2€ each. How do these people make money? Not that we are complaining…..
We had a lovely 2 days here, cycling, relaxing, reading, and soaking up the sunshine.
We left this morning at 10.15am heading for Nevers. The weather was a bit overcast, but pleasant all the same.
We travelled at 5 knots, heading SSE, through one very small lock with a lazy student as a lock-keeper who was so slow, he got no bottle of beer! We even had to toot our horn to waken him up to open the gates for us!
The next double lock was absolutely huge, 9.23m, and we arrived at 12.15, tied up before the lock as it was the lunchtime break, and went to have a look. It was almost like a burial chamber! There were 2 boats in front of us and at 1pm, the lock-keeper got the lock ready, and we all went in together. The lock-keeper handed a hook down to everyone to take their lines up (thank god!) and then once we were up to the level, the doors opened and it was into the next chamber, and the same again. We then went across a viaduct, similar to the Pont on the Canal De Briare, and were on our way again. The double lock took one full hour to lock through.
We continued, a further 10km to Nevers with 2 descending locks taking us along to the Port De Plaisance. We arrived here at 4pm with a huge downpour of rain just as we were locking through, and although we had only travelled 16.22nm in total, we were both exhausted. Think it must have been the stress of the double lock!
We will stay here likely until Sunday or Monday before moving on in the direction of Digoin.
Nevers is 46’58’.756N 003’10’.008E and we have travelled 1312nm to this point.
