Au Revoir Belle Honfleur - Monday 16th June 2008

Honfleur is a magical little place, so pretty and the marina attracts an abundance of tourists who constantly gaze at you aboard! The weather has been mixed with some rain in the early mornings and then it brightens up with intense heat mid morning, and continues for the rest of the day.
We managed a bit of cycling although not as much as normal as Honfleur has very cobbled and uneven streets and it was not great on our bums…….
We took the little tourist train around the village which took us up a very steep hill to the Cote De Grace Church where I lit a candle for my Dad at the altar. The Church dates back to 1600 and is absolutely beautiful inside and out.
There is also a Saturday market in Honfleur with many bargains, mainly clothes and excellent quality leather products.
The daily fish market has a huge array of local fish for sale, straight from the boats, and there is an excellent supermarket in the heart of the town where we discovered Il Flotante - a very tasty dessert of crème anglaise with a floating soft meringue and caramel syrup topping it all off. Needless to say the fridge was stocked up with these before departure!
We set off at 8.30am this morning from Honfleur at low water heading for Rouen(this is the only time to leave here if you are doing the passage to Rouen as you need to ‘ride with the tide’ because if you get it wrong you could have almost 5 knots coming against you and with a speed limit of 15 knots maximum, you would be getting knowhere fast, not to mention the waste of fuel!). You must also make sure you have enough time to get to Rouen as you are not permitted to travel 30 minutes after sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise.
The frogs believe in making things difficult......
