Bonjour Historique Rouen - Monday 16th June 2008

So, off we went, through the Honfleur exit lock, under the Pont de Normandie heading for Rouen. The weather was fabulous, bright blue skies, sunshine and a light breeze to cool us down on the fly bridge. The scenery was breathtaking on route, but the closer we got to Rouen (62 nm) the more industrial it became. After La Bouille, the speed restriction reduced to 8 knots and we felt almost like a yacht! We cannot believe this is us on Ginger Grouse, heading upstream on the River Seine, it is quite an amazing feeling, and we haven’t bashed the boat…..yet!
We arrived at Rouen at 1.15pm and safely moored up on the Halte de Plaisance on Ile Lacroix with a very helpful Capitainerie catching our lines. Good facilities here and only 14.40 euros per night which includes electricity and showers. We have the most beautiful peniche moored next to us with plant pots full of geraniums on deck and the washing drying in the breeze between 2 poles. Fabulous.
We headed to buy our VNF Licence at the VNF Office which was only 5 minutes walk away. Cost for an annual permit was 240 euros, and gives us until 31st December 2008 in the Canal System if we want it.
Rouen is a city of much history and Joan of Arc was burned at the stake here in 1431, so I better watch my P‘s and Q‘s or I might follow suit! There is also the most stunning Le Gros Horloge which was closed on Monday but we will visit this on Tuesday. The visit enables you to discover the pavilion and the belfry, from the dials’ room to the bells’ chamber, through the clockmasters workshop.
And, there is the most amazing Cathedral in Place de la Cathedrale with a huge pedestrianised shopping area that resembles Oxford Street, London! So there is plenty to do and see. We will stay here until Wednesday, which will give us time to do a bit of sightseeing and lower the radar and aerial mast in preparation for our next stage through the canals.
Rouen is 49’26’.10N 001’06’.01’ E and we have travelled 963nm up to this point, incredible!
