We have enjoyed our very short time here in Cherbourg, but the weather is too good for us to stay and we will seize the opportunity to now move on ESE towards Honfleur, which is situated at the bottom of the River Seine.
Cherbourg is a lovely town, not much different to parts of Paris, with pretty churches and lovely little restaurants and bars. We enjoyed Moules et Frites x 2 at a local bar at 7 Euros a head, which was lovely, sitting outside in the evening sunshine. The weather since we arrived in France has been cloudless skies and very warm. We read in one of the newspapers that there was going to be a heat wave from 1st June until 31st August in France, and their predictions so far seem to be coming true!
We stocked up with wine and food at the local Carrefour Supermarche, 20 minutes walk from the marina, you would be silly not to at 2 Euros a bottle for Red Cote Du Rhone and 3.49 Euros a bottle for White Muscadet, with the collapsible trolleys Sharon and Alex Kean gave us as a leaving gift coming in really handy to wheel the dozen bottles back to GG.
We also visited La Cite De La Mer which was a fabulous 4 hour half day exhibition on what goes on in the depths of the sea, which included the most magnificent aquarium and a visit on board La Redoutable submarine which was recently de-commissioned.
We left at 1.15pm this afternoon, heading for Honfleur with a Force 3 from the North West and the sea state slight. Perfect conditions for us. We travelled at a comfortable 15 - 20 knots helming from the fly bridge in glorious sunshine and arrived at Honfleur at 6pm sun kissed and relaxed. On route we were ‘observed’ by a police helicopter travelling very low and Jim gave them a wave! We also had a fabulous view of le Pont de Normandie (pictured).
The basin at Honfleur for arrival is open on the half hour . We tied up to a ladder on the waiting wall and were met by a very helpful harbourmaster (lady) who asked us how long we were staying. When we told her that we wanted to stay until Sunday, we asked was it possible if we could have a pontoon instead of rafting up beside the rest of the yachts on the visitors wall. No problem. Great news for us, a pontoon, electricity and water!
Not sure how much sleep we are going to get here, as the Vieux Bassin where we are is in the centre of a bustling part of Honfleur with Restaurants, Cafes and a Carousel! We may need some extra glasses of the cheap plonk to knock us out!
Honfleur is 49’25’.219N 00’14’.025E (we crossed the meridian from west to east at 5pm today).
We plan on staying here until Sunday when we will depart for Rouen and enter into the Canals.
