I always try and fill my week here in Glasgow when I am back, and apart from visiting my mum, and going to the pictures to see The Debt (marvellous movie!) this week, I went to the Citizens Theatre on Wednesday night with Alison from our office and her Mum, to see Ena Lamont Stewart's play, Men Should Weep. This is the third time I have seen the play, which was written by Bill Stewart's (our best man at the wedding) mother. Jim & I saw it on a previous occasion at the Citizens and also travelled to London to see it performed there.
This production at the Citizens was excellent, by the National Theatre of Scotland. The play revolves around matriarch Maggie Morrison as she struggles to hold her family together with her husband John out of work, her son Bertie with TB, barely enough food to feed the endless mouths, and no money.
For me, Lorraine McIntosh as Maggie and Maureen Carr as Mrs. Wilson were the stars of the show, as well as Ann Scott-Jones as Granny who is the most wonderfully funny character.
I am so pleased this play is getting the recognition now that it deserves, with packed out full houses around the country. It is just a pity Ena Lamont Stewart is not here now to enjoy the full extent of her brilliance.
