Nos Premières Tomates

Our first tomatoes of the year are ready, and Jim is going to miss tasting them! We have 2 varieties, little cherry tomatoes which are great for small salads and snacking and the larger 'beef' style tomatoes which can be stuffed with minced meat or rice and baked in the oven. Thanks so much to Louis our gardener for looking after everything, it is amazing, coming soon will be beetroot, green peppers, green beans, cauliflower and god knows what else. We may become vegetarian!
Our courgette plant also seems to be almost taking over with all this hot sun and is almost 2 feet high now with the biggest courgettes I have ever seen, they look more like marrows! Don't worry Jim, I have picked this one to make your soup for next week!
I also made a lovely simple soup yesterday with carrots and onions from the garden, picked yesterday, and that will do me for lunch all week. Just cooked them off with a good pinch of ground cumin in some rapeseed oil, and then added a pint and a half of vegetable stock, cooked until tender, blitzed in the blender, seasoned with salt and pepper et voila, a tasty soup indeed. I never thought soup would be so welcome in this heatwave, but it hits the spot.
Last and by no means least......Bert the Builder arrived this morning with a frog from his vast collection, for our pond to keep Freddy company, so Freda is re-incarnated. Since depositing Freda, the new frog in the pool, she (or he, who knows!) has never shut up, croaking all the time, hopping up onto the side of the pool, diving back in for a swim, so Freda seems very happy indeed in her new pad and she is not like Freddy at all, he is very sedate, she is very lively. I haven't seen Freddy since she arrived, perhaps she has scared him to death, I don't know, but I heard him during the night croaking, so think he is still in there somewhere....Difficult to get pictures of them, got this one of Freddy a few nights ago, can only just make him out on the edge of the pool.
