Cultural Cannes - Saturday 21st-Sunday 22nd February, 2009

The week-end weather here has been very pleasant, overcast in the mornings and then clear blue skies in the afternoon with lovely sunshine.
On Saturday, we did a discovery walking tour which took us to the Old Town, where we visited the Castle Museum and then we went down hill and along Rue d’Antibes, which is home to a superb selection of shops, delis, a fabulous fish/flower/fruit&veg market and even a ‘pound stretcher’ shop (here is it called a ‘tout a 2€’ shop). We never thought we would see one of these in Cannes!
We then relaxed in one of the cafĂ©’s and watched the world go by until the sun started going down and it got a bit chilly.
On Saturday evening, we decided to give another restaurant a chance to impress us and went to Relais Des Semailles, a quaint, seductive little place on Rue St. Antoine. What a difference from last night - their Menu Gourmand menu at 39€ was incredible - We had Amuse Bouche of a Sea Urchin filled with frothy cheese & mushrooms with an asparagus mousse, then it was squid in a provencale sauce with artichokes, and after that it was sea bream with a mussel risotto, followed by the piece de resistance of caramel roast pork served with sweet onions and crispy vegetables. The dessert of mille feuille with pears poached in sauternes and spices was a perfect end to the most perfect of meals.
Our faith in French cooking is yet again restored! Phew……
On Sunday we went by ferry to the Island of Sainte Marguerite which is just a few minutes offshore of Cannes.
We visited the Maritime Museum which is home to the famous prison where the Man in the Iron Mark was held during the reign of Louis XIV.
During the Thirty Years War, the Island was occupied by the Spanish, who built Fort Royal between 1635-1637.
Our time here in Cannes has been lovely, but we are going to take advantage of the perfect sailing conditions and move on again, tomorrow, to Nice.
