Au Revoir Les Roches de Condrieu, Bonjour Valence, River Rhone - Sunday 12th October 2008

Les Roches de Condrieu was a lovely, sleepy little village with narrow streets and a handful of shops. The weather since we arrived has been lovely, sunshine and light clouds, warm enough to get the shorts back on again!
Across the bridge, there is another village called Condrieu with lots of lovely little bars and restaurants, as well as a good Friday market. We spent Friday afternoon relaxing there and had a lovely meal in Nikos, a newly opened Greek restaurant. The food was first class, all home-made and very tasty. The dolmades, dips, and octopus starters were all excellent, and the mains of Mousakka and Fish stew were fab too. Ice Cream and Apple Crumble finished off a great meal. By the time we had finished our meal, it was dark so we had to cycle home very carefully on the roads without any lights!
We left this morning at 10.10am heading South on the mighty Rhone towards Valence with 3 huge locks on route.
It was a beautiful morning with light wispy clouds and sunshine, a perfect day for sailing.
The scenery on route was some of the prettiest yet, so dramatic with the mountains in the background. We helmed from the fly bridge for all of the trip with a light, warm Southerly breeze taking the edge off the hot sunshine.
We locked through the 3 locks with no hassle whatsoever and it helped that we were travelling just behind a laden peniche and locked through with it. Huge drops (15m; 12m; 13m) were the order of the day, trouble free with the floating bollards carrying our lines down as usual.
We arrived at Port de l’Eperviere, 1km past Valence, at 4.15pm, travelling an average of 6-7 knots, and tied up on the visitors pontoons in the Port de Plaisance.
Valence is 44’54’.732N 004’52’.342E and we travelled a total of 36.52nm today. This takes our total nautical mileage travelled to 1695, through 251 locks and we have had 61 stops.
