Au Revoir Belle Avignon, Bonjour Aigues Mortes, Canal Du Rhone a Sete - Wednesday 22nd October, 2008

We left this morning at 10am in rain, thunder and lighting!(ready at 9am but had to wait until a yacht moved from the fuelling pontoon, which was eventually a waste of time, as the marina’s fuel ran out after 36 litres!!!) heading South down the Mighty Rhone at 15 knots, with 4-5 knots of current behind us, pushing us faster. There was also a Mistral forecast for the afternoon and the wind was picking up, making it very difficult to cope with the abundance of floating logs to be dodged.
We locked through our last Sea Lock with at 18.50m drop and then picked up the Petit Rhone, turning off at Fourgues, heading West. We travelled along this very bleak river at 5 knots in horrendous torrential rain and truly miserable conditions until we came to the St. Giles Lock and the start of the Canal Du Rhone a Sete. We locked through in difficult windy conditions, with thankfully only a 1.5m drop and then it was out into the marshlands, and heading South West for Aigues Mortes.
We passed some beautiful Camargue horses by the side of the Canal and managed to get some pictures of them despite the rain and we also got a small glimpse of some pink flamingoes in the distance.
We arrived at Aigues Mortes at 4pm, and found a space on the visitors pontoon, and moored safely with the wind thankfully having dropped although the rain was still pouring from the heavens!
We travelled 41nm today, through our last 2 locks, taking our total mileage to 1806nm and total number of locks to 259. Aigues Mortes is our 63rd stop and is 43’34’.103N 004’11’.310E and we will stay here a few nights before moving on to Sete at the weekend once the weather returns to its normal hot and sunny self!
The Marina is outside the medieval walls in a beautiful setting with great facilities, but quite expensive at 21€ per night.
