What a fabulous time we have had in Dijon. Today is our last day here and the weather has been almost perfect throughout our stay - cold mornings followed by warm Autumn sunshine in the afternoons and then cold and clear evenings.
There were two highlights - one was spending almost a week with Charlie and Elaine, from Largs (see separate blog pages) - two was the afternoon wine tasting with Nicolas from Authentica Wine Tours.
We travelled by mini bus from Dijon through Marsannay and Fixin to Gevrey Chambertin to our first wine tasting where we sampled 7 individual, classy wines and had a view of their cellar. All the wines were outstanding and pricey! Nevertheless, we bought a couple of bottles as a souvenir of the visit.
We then travelled through Morey St-Denis and Chambolle Musigny, with Nicolas pointing out the Grand Crus and Premier Crus vineyards on route, as well as explaining everything there is to know about wine and growing. We stopped at Vougeot and tasted another 6 delicious wines (not as good as Gevrey Chambertin) and plumped for another couple of bottles.
Because of the poor summer this year in the Bourgogne Region, picking for this year has been delayed until the last week in September, and with the recent good spell of sunshine, we are promised a good harvest for 2008.
We will reluctantly wave Au Revoir to Dijon tomorrow morning at 10am, heading back through the same 20 locks to St. Jean de Losne on La Saone again.
Once we reach St. Jean de Losne tomorrow evening, we will have travelled through 241 locks and a total of 1527NM.
Our plan is to start making our way back to Chalon Sur Saone and then head South down La Saone towards Lyon and then onto the Rhone towards Avignon, with lots of stops in between!
