St. Thibault (Sancerre), Canal Lateral a la Loire - Thursday 31st July - Sunday 3rd August 2008

Well, this is just as magical a place as it gets. The Port De Plaisance in St. Thibault is a great location to visit Sancerre, just 15 minutes away by car, and the Capitainerie runs a shuttle service on demand for 6 euros per person, return.
After the rain, thunder and lightning which really cleared the air on Thursday evening, Friday was a much cooler and manageable day, weather wise, and we spent the afternoon in Sancerre relaxing, wine tasting, relaxing, wine tasting!
First, we visited the Maison Des Sancerre which was fascinating, with an excellent visual exhibition and fantastic gardens with incredible views, followed by wine tasting of 6 different wines. We then went to L’Aronde Sancerroise, recommended by the Capitainerie, and sampled about 8 different white wines, 3 rose, and 4 red and by that time, we were both in a bad way, needing air, and me feeling sick! We chose the best that we could remember…… and bought 2 red, 1 rose and 3 white which will be kept for special occasions, or likely until we run out of the cheap plonk.
And to finish our lovely afternoon, after a half an hour walk to clear our heads, we had amazing Ice Cream desserts of Rum & Raisin and Coffee flavours with Chantilly Cream and then I started to feel sick again - I’ll never learn!
On Saturday, it was another overcast cooler day with some spots of rain, but we did a bit of cycling beside the River Loire in the morning and then had a lovely lunch (my faith in French Cooking has been restored after the last time!) in L’Auberge de St. Thibault. We had delicious starters of Braised Pork Salad with an Orange Vinaigrette, and then Gratin Canard which was Braised Duck with Almonds with delicious delicate crushed potatoes, presented beautifully on the plate in layers/Cote de Boeuf avec Fruits Rouges which Jim said was delicious, especially his potatoes! Jim then had a plate of mixed Fromages and then we both had the lightest Apricot Tart served flambĂ©ed with Rum and vanilla ice cream. So, that was dinner taken care of for Saturday!
Sunday, we relaxed, caught up on the washing as usual and cycled to Menetreol in between the showers. There is a stop here too which is free, but the electricity and water are chargeable. We were glad that we had chosen St. Thibault instead, as the village is nicer and has a bit more life to it, as well as better facilities.
We will be heading off tomorrow morning in the direction of Nevers, likely stopping at Herry and Marseilles Les Aubigny on route.
