Celebrations at La Table D'Olivier Leflaive, Puligny Montrachet - Saturday 24/3/12

We cannot believe that this Monday marks a year since we tied the knot, how time flies.....To celebrate, we headed off on Saturday morning to the little village of Puligny Montrachet, 45 miles from our home in Marly Sur Arroux. The weather here at the moment is absolutely beautiful, warm and sunny days and cold, clear nights. The drive took us on a bit of a nostalgic route which brought back many happy memories, along the Canal Du Centre, past St. Leger Sur Dheune, Santenay, Chagny on the Route des Grands Crus, to La Maison Olivier Leflaive **** in Puligny.
We arrived at 9.30am in time for the start of our booked 'package' which included a walk to the vineyards followed by a tour of their workshop, then a tasting lunch with 8 wines included, dinner & overnight stay with breakfast.
The guided tour with Simon, our Sommelier, was excellent and very informative. He explained about the different soils of the plots and how this had significant impact on how good the wines were, from the local 'Villages' bottles to the 'Premier Crus' quality. Then we walked back to the village and were escorted by Patrick, the brother of Olivier Leflaive, around the workshop, and he explained the methods from the start of the grape picking, to the end bottled result. After that, it was a welcome seat for lunch ( cheese gougeres;tuna/parsley with chardonnay jelly & smoked salmon;Stuffed chicken with mushrooms and Chardonnay Sauce, pureed potatoes; cheese selection; home-made chocolate mousse) with 8 absolutely delicious (Aligote; Setilles; Saint Romain; Meursault;Puligny Montrachet; Chassagne-Montrachet; Cuvee Margot and Pommard), different wines, accompanying the beautifully presented 5 course lunch.
Our room number 1 (very appropriate number for our first anniverary) was a welcome retreat for a lie down before tonight's delicious 5 course dinner (Bruschetta with parma ham & parmesan; yellow carrot soup; grilled king prawns with avodaco mousse; duck spring roll with red wine and orange dipping sauce; cheese and finally apple & pear crumble) and a bottle of wine.
The good thing about the food was, both lunch and dinner, albeit 5 courses, the plates served were very small, just slightly bigger than tapas style, so absolutely perfect for us, phew!
After a light breakfast, we headed off at 11am, stopping in Santenay and St. Leger Sur Dheune, to re-live our previous time there from our 2008 boat trip. Nothing had changed, it was all just as beautiful.
Back home to reality now and filling up the swimming pool!!! Fingers crossed this doesn't jinx the weather, please stay sunny!
