La Table de Fanny - c'est magnifique! - Wednesday 29th/Thursday 30th September 2010

Well, what can I say other than Dinner last night in Fanny was wonderful. What a place. The interior was simple, with whitewashed brick walls, black and white photographs of typical French scenes and the picture of the old lady choosing some apples from the market was so full of character, I nearly cried. We went for a few beers first to Bar au Thym and then to Fanny at 8pm. The place was very busy, but we had a choice of 3 tables for two, and by 8.30pm, the place was full. We plumped for the 23 euros per head menu which was a main course and dessert from the a la carte. Jim had Cabillaud which was poached in milk and served with pureed artichokes and a frothy substance that neither he nor I knew what it was! I had crispy skinned Dorade with garden vegetables, and they both were first class. A bottle of Sancerre washed them down nicely. For dessert, Jim went for Le 3k, which was 3 small portions of their desserts, with an espresso, and I went for Le Best of which was 5 small portions of their desserts, with no coffee! Amazing. The presentation on slates was wonderful with the name of each dessert masked in icing sugar across the centre. Jim had marinated pineapple, orange sorbet and a chocolate marquise cake and I had the same plus orange crepes suzette and caramel ice cream. Delicious, yum yum, same again please maintenant!
With the wine and a couple of glasses we had of Chardonnay as an aperitif, the meal came to 80 euros, more pricey than La Clown Gourmand, but still worth it. We had tap water with the meal that came in a silver teapot which was embossed with H20 and a huge handle and spout, with beautiful wobbly lavender coloured water glasses…..a touch of class. The bill came on a clothes peg with a skewer of marshmallow flumps, and on the table was a glass jar of pic n mix sweeties to tempt you. We tried not to have too many, it was greed, but the jelly crocodiles and heart shaped smarties kept beckoning!
A highly recommended delightful place, full of fun, great ambience and above all, magnificent food.
Thursday
We headed off again after showers and breakfast at 11.15 north - same direction as yesterday. The weather today is pretty overcast and a bit chilly, although the weak sun is trying hard to break through. We travelled at a steady 6-7 knots as yesterday and then opened the boat up full throttle to 20 knots when the coast was clear, to give GG II a bit of a blast. They are very strict here in France and have varied speed limits on different parts of the rivers/canals, so we couldn’t blast out for very long in case we got caught! It took us 2 ½ hours to get to Verdun sur les Doubs, a total of 24km away. Verdun is a stop we had visited before in 2008, and it hadn’t changed a bit. We had our usual garlic sausage and cheese sarnies on board for lunch (that’s the Garlic Sausage finished now thank god, it has been stinking the fridge out for 2 days!) and then headed back down river, dodging the logs and debris, at a comfortable, leisurely 6 knots, to our wee berth in Chalon. The rain that was forecast didn’t disappoint and we had to put the canopies up on route back as we were getting drenched! Both of us had forgotten how tiring sailing is and we were both knackered when we arrived back at 16.00.
We are having dinner on board this evening and have some lovely salmon mousse for starters and peppered duck breast for mains with some mashed tatties and carrot and celery slaw. If we manage the Ile Flotante desserts after this, it will be a miracle!
