Today was another gloriously warm day and we walked to The Cathedral which was built circa 1600. The outside features a beautiful Baroque marble façade and inside was amazing with chapels separated by pillars and 17th Century decorations.
Jim then headed to The Priamar Fortress, commissioned in 1542 by the Republic of Genoa. He said the views were just amazing over the city and port and the Fortress was steeped in history.
After a light lunch, we did a bit of shopping and then headed out for dinner at 7pm in Osteria Bacco, a little fish restaurant opposite the harbour. The meal was one of the most ‘interesting’ meals we had every had! Firstly, we were met by a mad looking owner who showed us to our table and then asked whether we wanted white or red wine and still or sparkling water. That sorted, he then told us what we were having to start with - mixed fish starters, which were all absolutely delicious. He then offered us a second course - there was no menu, no mention of prices - he just told us what we could have. I chose Spaghetti with mixed seafood and Jim plumped for a mixed fish grill. The plates were very big and I started panicking in case the owner was going to tell us we had another course to come! Thankfully, he didn’t and we went onto Tiramisu for dessert and some coffees. Overall, it wasn’t the best food we had eaten, but certainly the most entertaining……The restaurant was decorated with football strips, galleon wooden boats, pots and pans - all hanging from the ceiling. We wondered whether the mad owner would lose it one night and drop the pots on a diners’ head! It was obviously a popular place, as it was heaving full as we left.
After our dinner, we walked to The Chiabrera Theatre to see ‘A Chorus Line’ - all in Italian of course! We had smashing seats in a box overlooking the stage, and the Theatre was very beautiful indeed. The production was a bit disappointing with no interval (2 hours 10 mins), the singers and dancers were amateurish, but the live band was absolutely outstanding. The best bit was at the end when it finished…….
We will relax another day here in Savona, and head off on Saturday morning to Porto Antico in Genova.
