We had a lovely, relaxing few days here in Chalon Sur Saone and the weather was delightful. It is a huge town with beautiful cathedrals, restaurants and cafes and close to the marina there is the biggest Carrefour we have ever seen which is part of an indoor shopping mall. McDonalds provided us with free wi-fi and great milk shakes, so we were well looked after here.
We had a lovely meal out on Saturday night at Le Poisson Bleu. It was very difficult for us to choose what restaurant to eat in as they all looked so lovely, but I am glad we chose wisely, as the food was superb and healthy (apart from the desserts!).
Appetizers of Squid marinated in Shallots and Vinegar teased us into an Entrée of Norwegian Smoked Salmon served with Soured Cream and Shallots/Herring in Mustard and Sugar/Herring in Vinegar. The main course of Black Tiger Prawns/Fillet of Sandre and Scallops, all accompanied with sauces to compliment each one and Mashed Tatties was fabulous and we finished with Grand Assiete of mixed desserts for me and Jim had Vanilla Ice Cream wrapped in crushed nuts with Chantilly Cream. All well presented and first class.
We had a lovely surprise on Monday afternoon with Julie and Martin arriving on MyTime and they treated us to a fabulous meal out in the evening at Le Bistrot (another meal out!).
We had delicious Appetizers of Spiced Gazpacho and then Salmon Tartare to start with all round, followed by Breast and Leg of Chicken with Garlic Foam served with a selection of delicious vegetables (Julie and I) /Pan Fried Magret de Canard (Martin)/Pan Fried Dorade (Jim). There was a cheese course which I declined washed down with Port, and then the desserts were as usual to die for and Julie and I had a trio of chocolate desserts, Jim had Crème Brulee and Martin had the best ever chocolate souffle with liquid chocolate inside, you have ever seen! Heaven………….We left at 11.30pm and headed back to GG for some nightcaps and a sing song with the guitar and clarinet - don’t think we were very popular with the American neighbours on either side of us!
We set off this morning in fabulous sunshine at 12.30pm, after fuelling up - this is the first we have fuelled up since St. Mammes and she took 260 litres, which equates to 1 litre an hour of useage on the canals, which is great value - and headed North (we are heading towards Dijon on the Canal de Bourgogne to meet with Charlie & Elaine from Largs, who are coming over on the 17th September, for a visit. We will then head back South at the end of September) towards Verdun sur le Doubs, which is on the River Saone. It was superb being able to plane the boat at 19 knots on the River, after so long at 5 knots on the canals, so we planed for a short while and then dropped back to one engine at 8 knots. The River is very wide and we had a fab trip taking in the lovely scenery, travelling 16.05nm, arriving at 1.45pm. The Port De Plaisance is in a beautiful setting, just beside the River Doubs and has great facilities including wi-fi on board.
We will stay here for one night and then head off, weather permitting (there is some rain forecast over the next few days) tomorrow to Seurre, through only one lock.
