Au Revoir St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Bonjour Carteret, France - Thursday 5th June 2008 - GINGER GROUSE EST ARRIVEE EN FRANCE!

We have had such a lovely time here in Guernsey, the town of St.Peter Port is full of French styled buildings, with churches set just beside Marks and Spencer!
We discovered when we arrived here that we had a very small diesel leak on the starboard engine and phoned a local company, Marine & General Engineering, who came within 2 hours to fix the problem - a small o-ring in the fuel injector pump had gone (apparently a known fault by Volvo engineers). Fabulous service and it was fixed within 20 minutes.
We spent our time here cycling and visited Castle Cornet which was really interesting with 3 museums, stunning grounds and spectacular views of the port. We had our usual Pub Crawls sampling the local brews, and we had a lovely meal to celebrate Jim’s birthday on Monday night in the Harbour restaurant, Saltwater.
We also visited Victor Hugo’s amazing home, Hauteville House, with its eccentric interior decoration, set over 3 levels, with amazing views. On a clear day he could see France from his 3rd floor bedroom window.
We went via Catamaran to Herm, another of the Channel Islands, for a day visit . It is only 20 minutes from Guernsey and ashore, it has the most beautiful beaches, prettiest gardens, with no cars to spoil the peace and quiet.
On Thursday morning, we set off at 8am for fuel, before departing at 8.30am heading South East then East to Carteret, in France, our very first French port of call. The weather was a bit overcast , with a Force 1 / 2 with a huge 4ft swell from SW.
It is only 35 miles from Guernsey to Carteret, and again, we had to get the timings right, leaving Guernsey when the sill was at the right level, and arriving at Carteret +/- 2.5 hours high water, as it dries to 5m above chart datum at entry.
We had a very comfortable journey, travelling at 20 knots, with the sea state smooth.
Carteret is 49’22’.08N 01’47’.24W.
We will enjoy this lovely village for a few days before heading further towards Honfleur on Monday, weather permitting.
Up to this point, we have covered 775 nautical miles.
