Au Revoir L'Illon, Bonjour Meulan et Port St. Louis - Monday 23rd June 2008

L’Illon was a lovely Port de Plaisance with very helpful staff and excellent shower and laundry facilities so we didn’t mind paying 21 euros per night for a bit more comfort, and it gave us the chance to catch up on the washing!
We did some cycling to the nearby town of Guernes through lovely countryside, to stock up at the local grocery shop with some food, wine and beers. There are no shops or pubs in L’Illon and only a small grocers in Guernes.
As it was the week-end there was much activity at the marina with plenty of locals arriving to have BBQ’s on board and to relax. It was lovely to be in such a beautiful setting and to chill out too.
On Saturday, we met Martin and Julie from My Time, a Sealine S28, who had just arrived and we discovered they were doing the same adventure as us, what a small world. We had drinks on board their boat and then we returned the favour on Sunday afternoon on GG. They, like us, were not too comfortable in the huge locks and it was nice to chat through all our experiences so far! After drinks on Sunday, Julie dropped off a huge plate of home made Spag Bol for us, which was absolutely delicious, to save me having to cook the ‘donkey’s willy’ sausages I have in the fridge that I have been avoiding having. (They are not really donkey willy sausages, they are pork and herb, I promise).
We set off this morning at 10.15am, fuelling up before leaving, heading for Meulan and a visit to their Monday morning market. There is a free pontoon in Meulan available there.
We passed some absolutely stunning countryside on route and the sun was splitting the skies. The Cathedral in Mantes-La-Jolie looked beautiful as we passed.
We arrived at Meulan at 12 noon and thankfully there was nobody on the pontoon (just as well as there is only really room for one boat or two very small boats). It is a nice setting with ducks and swans swimming around, and a well kept park, but we were a bit concerned at some of the characters in the park and were worried to leave the boat for a long time. We tied up and headed for the market which was just next to the pontoon, and were just in time to get some fresh fruit, some choux balls and a cooked chicken, before they started closing up.
We cycled to the supermarket to top up the shopping whilst we could and then we relaxed for a few hours before deciding to move on to Port St Louis, which is 1km from Poissy, to a more secure marina. We arrived here at 7pm. It is a bit bleak but has most basic facilities and is secure, and we will likely stop here a few nights before moving to the next lock at Andresy.
Port Saint Louis is 48’56’.557N 002’00’.537E.
We are currently 81km from Paris.
